its a keeper's market

Ned is now officially the man of LA.
I don't know how to feel about this at all. lots of questions yet to be answered, and I guess in about a month or two, I'll make the final decision on Ned's ability and be abl to evaluate the choice of McCourts.
whatever happens happens, but dodgers should be cautious to give out long term contracts to washed up vets like Brian Giles or Johnny Damon. Joe Randa will make a great stopgap 3b for the next year or two, and Jarrod Washburn will more than replace Jeff Weaver, but free agent market ends short right about there.
NO NOMAR if it's more than a year or two.
NO TRADING our farm away for offense.
we have plenty of it as long as we add one bat for the 5th spot in batting order.
1 - Cezar (when healthy ) or Perez/Robles platton SS
2 - Choi 1B
3 - Drew CF
4 - Kent 2B
5 - Randa or Nomar ( if only for one to two year contract) 3B
6 - Cruz Jr RF
7 - Werth LF
8 - Navarro C

if Washburn is signed,

Lowe
Washburn
Penny
Perez
Billingsley

what a nice rotation it would be, with Houlton and Jackson to back up any injuries.

Kuo / schmoll / brazoban / sanchez / Gagne

looks like an impressive bullpen, as long as Gagne stays healthy and kuo continues his dominance from last year
( AA ERA below 2 with Five strike out of six batters in majors he showed at the end of miserable dodger season in 2005 )

as long as ned doesn't sell out our youngsters, we will be a dynasty once again in two to three years when AA kids move up to the big league.

just imagine

1 - Delwyn Young 2B
2 - Cezar Izturis SS
3 - Joel Guzman LF
4 - J.D. Drew CF
5 - H.S. Choi 1B
6 - Andy LaRoche 3B
7 - Dioner Naverro C
8 - Jayson Werth RF

with

Penny - Washburn - Billingsley - Jackson - Tiffany
with Kuo - brazoban - broxton - gagne in the pen....

just a dream for now, but someday...

Do you really want Washburn in the rotation? I have to disagree with he would be better than weaver because I dont think he'd come close to weaver's production and I dont even really like Weaver.

Here's to hoping that Neddy doesn't sell the farm down the river.

As for Washburn, I'm not sold. And for the pen, I'm worried that future Gagne will not match past Gagne.

yes, I agree with a lot of things you guys are concerned about. but it is what it is now. Ned is our GM. we have to give him a chance. I hated the choice McCourts made, especially being a guy from the giants and all, ( Jackie Robinson must be rolling in his grave ) but the decision has been made. if he fails and get fired in a year or two, our beloved dodgers will be the laughing joke in baseball.

There is just a difference in opinion on what statistics matter between us.

Jeff Weaver:

224 IP ( Insanely important)
6.31 K/9
1.73 BB/9
1.41 HR/9

Jarrod Washburn:
177 IP
4.77 K/9
2.59 BB/9
0.96 HR/9

Bill James said and i'm paraphrasing here " The Three outcomes, K's/BB's/Hr's are a better indicator or a pitchers ERA than ERA ever is".

While I dont know where to find the statistic I can confidently say Washburn was probably one of the luckiest pitchers in the league this past year and his era next year will probably balloon to where he was at the last few years.

As far as "wins", this may be the most useless in the useless statistics when evaluating individual performance.

The resigning of Weaver is another question entirely but you can't say Washburn is better than Weaver when he's not really even close.

To add, Washburn isn't very good on his own merit. It would probably be a better idea to let a journeyman or farmhand pitcher to fill that spot. He'll probably be just as good and not cost anything. If the Dodgers MUST have Washburn it better not be for more than 1 or 2 years or over 3 million dollars.

good banter...

according to FIP - ERA, washburn may have been the luckiest pitcher in baseball last year, according to the hardball times.
